How We Install a Concrete Driveway: Start to Finish
Ever wonder what actually goes into installing a concrete driveway that lasts 30+ years?
It's more than just pouring some gray stuff and smoothing it out. A quality concrete driveway requires careful planning, proper site preparation, and attention to detail at every step. Cut corners, and you'll see cracks, settling, and drainage problems within a few years.
At Southern Style Turf & Design, we don't cut corners. With 25 years of experience serving Cherryville, Lincolnton, and Gastonia, we know exactly what it takes. Here's exactly how we do it—start to finish.
Step 1: Site Assessment & Planning (Day 1)
Before we dig a single shovel, we assess your property.
What we look for:
- Drainage patterns – Where does water flow? We need to direct it away from your home.
- Soil conditions – Clay, sand, or rocky? Each requires different prep.
- Existing utilities – Gas lines, water, electric, fiber—we call 811 before we dig.
- Access points – How will concrete trucks reach the site?
- Slope requirements – Proper pitch prevents water pooling (minimum 1/4" per foot).
What you get:
- Detailed estimate with measurements
- Timeline for the project
- Discussion of design options (basic, stamped, colored, etc.)
- Answers to all your questions
Step 2: Excavation & Grading (Day 2-3)
Now the real work begins.
What we do:
1. Mark the area – Spray paint or stakes outline the driveway footprint
2. Excavate to proper depth – Typically 8-12 inches deep (depends on soil and expected load)
3. Remove all organic material – Roots, topsoil, vegetation—anything that will decompose and cause settling
4. Grade the subgrade – Create proper slope for drainage
5. Compact the soil – Use a plate compactor or roller to create a stable base
Why it matters:
A solid, well-compacted subgrade is the foundation of your driveway. Skimp here, and you'll have problems later. We don't skimp.
Step 3: Base Layer Installation (Day 3-4)
The base layer is what separates your concrete from the soil—and what prevents settling and cracking.
What we install:
- Crushed stone base – Typically 4-6 inches of compacted gravel (3/4" minus or similar)
- Proper drainage – Base slopes away from structures
- Compaction in layers – We compact in 2-3 inch lifts for maximum density
Why crushed stone?
- Drains water away from the concrete
- Prevents freeze-thaw heaving
- Creates a stable, load-bearing surface
- Reduces cracking risk
Optional upgrade: Geotextile fabric beneath the base layer for extra stability in soft soil conditions.
Step 4: Formwork & Reinforcement (Day 4-5)
Time to build the mold that shapes your driveway.
Formwork:
- Install sturdy forms (typically 2x6 or 2x8 lumber)
- Secure with stakes every 3-4 feet
- Set to exact grade and slope
- Double-check all measurements
Reinforcement:
We install one or more of the following, depending on your project:
- Rebar grid – Steel reinforcement for heavy-load areas
- Wire mesh – Helps control cracking
- Fiber reinforcement – Mixed into concrete for added tensile strength
Control joints:
We plan expansion joint and control joint locations to guide where cracks will form (in controlled, less visible spots).
Step 5: Concrete Pour (Day 5-6)
The big day. Weather must cooperate (no rain, temps between 50-85°F ideally).
What happens:
1. Concrete delivery – Ready-mix truck arrives with your specified mix (typically 3,500-4,000 PSI for driveways)
2. Pour and spread – We work quickly, spreading concrete evenly across the forms
3. Consolidation – Use vibrators to remove air pockets and ensure full compaction
4. Screeding – Drag a straight edge across the forms to level the surface
5. Bull floating – Smooth the surface and bring up the cream (fine aggregate)
Timing is critical:
Concrete starts setting immediately. We coordinate delivery and crew to work efficiently while the material is workable.
Step 6: Finishing (Day 6)
This is where skill and experience show.
The finishing process:
1. Edging – Round the edges along the forms for a clean, finished look
2. Jointing – Cut control joints to depth (1/4 of slab thickness)
3. Floating – Smooth the surface with hand floats or power trowels
4. Texturing – Apply broom finish (for traction), stamped pattern, or smooth finish based on your preference
5. Final touch-ups – Fix any imperfections before the concrete hardens
Decorative options:
- Broom finish – Classic, slip-resistant texture
- Stamped concrete – Brick, stone, or custom patterns
- Colored concrete – Integral color or surface stains
- Exposed aggregate – Reveals decorative stones in the mix
Step 7: Curing (Days 7-30)
Concrete gains strength as it cures—this step can't be rushed.
What we do:
- Apply curing compound – Seals moisture in for proper hydration
- Cover with plastic sheeting (if needed) – Protects from rapid drying or rain
- Monitor weather – Adjust curing methods based on temperature and humidity
Your part:
- Keep off the concrete for 7 days minimum (light foot traffic only)
- No vehicles for 10-14 days minimum
- Full cure takes 28 days for maximum strength
Common mistake: Driving on concrete too early causes surface damage and reduces long-term durability. We give you clear timelines—please follow them.
Step 8: Sealing (Optional, 30+ Days After Pour)
Once fully cured, we can apply a concrete sealer.
Benefits of sealing:
- Protects against stains (oil, grease, de-icing salts)
- Reduces water infiltration
- Enhances color (especially for decorative concrete)
- Extends lifespan
When to seal:
- Minimum 28 days after pour
- Best done in dry weather
- Reapply every 2-3 years for continued protection
Why Proper Installation Matters
Here's what happens when corners get cut:
❌ Skipped base layer → settling, cracking, uneven surface
❌ Poor drainage → water pooling, freeze damage, foundation problems
❌ Thin concrete → premature cracking, short lifespan
❌ No reinforcement → structural failure under load
❌ Rushed finishing → poor texture, surface defects
❌ Inadequate curing → weak concrete, early deterioration
We've been called in to fix too many "budget" driveways that failed within 5 years. Do it right the first time, and you'll have a driveway that lasts decades.
